It’s Winter Solstice Time – Actually Now it’s January But Who’s Checking!?

This post was begun on December 17th……. In my part of the world this year (actually LAST year!), the Winter Solstice means it’s time for a three day retreat at an awesome Hot Springs Resort several hours from my home in Boise Idaho. My daughter, Andrea, is hosting it. I am her “office girl”. That’s a good thing because I get more incite into this wonderful amazing segment of our world. You know, “it” isn’t all just coincidence. At lot of “it” is “in the cards”!

Blythe's Ruling Card

My Birth Card

This retreat is basically the intro to the Magi and the Cards of Destiny. I am pretty lost in this entire ‘world’ but it’s also very interesting to me. I’ll be discovering what my birthday and a standard deck of cards reveal about me, my past, present and future. Rather exciting!

Yesterday my ‘boss’ (daughter) asked if I’d make some place cards for the retreat attendees since, after all, I do make cards for all seasons and reasons. Well this was definitely a first and I’m quite pleased with how they turned out. Each place card will show the owner’s Birth Card and Planetary Ruling Card. These cards reflect your life and your path in our world and the energies that guide you. That’s the end of my ability to explain anything!

But, I can share the place cards we came up with. Since it is the Winter Solstice (shortest day of the year) we wanted a winter type theme. Her color faves are red, black white and turquoise-ish. Translated to Stampin’ Up!’s color palette that’s Real Red, Basic Black, Basic White and Pool Party. For our Winter theme we chose Basic White and Pool Party.

We chose Basic Black for the attendee’s names. Two name labels for each person, one on each side of their ‘tented’ place card. It was quite a challenge finding the proper alphabet letter at times, turning it the right way and then lining it up on the clear block. That “b” in Blythe (there are no upper case letters in this set) could be a “d” or a “p” or maybe a “q” when you’re looking at these tiny little photopolymer letters. I did find a rhythm eventually. Names were stamped on a 3/4″ – 7/8″ wide strip of Basic White card stock. I have no photos of the actual letters on the clear blocks! I snipped off each end of each name tag using Paper Snips. TIP: Cut a straight horizontal line in the middle at the end (or beginning) of the name and then snip in from each corner to that center line. It makes a very nice, clean “flag”. I attached each name to its card using 2-3 Dimensionals.

Card base is 4-1/4″ x 11″, scored at 5-1/2″. I stamped little snowflakes from the Reindeer Fun stamp set using Pool Party ink, for a nice cooling effect, about 1″ on each side of the middle fold. The Pool Party card stock layer behind the playing card measures 3″ x 4″. It was run through the Cut & Emboss Machine using the Snowflake Sky 3D embossing folder and then just glued to the card front — and back — two ‘playing’ cards.

Pretty clean and simple actually. The ‘worst’ part was finding and stamping those little letters for the names……all 18 of them times 2. (front and back)

My Planetary Ruling Card

I’m still learning what all of this means but it is very interesting, exciting and enlightening.

Finally here are all 18 place cards. This was a lovely meaningful challenge. And I look forward to being at Trinity Hot Springs at this time (Sunday early afternoon) next week. Actually, this is being posted in January and Trinity Hot Springs was really a therapeutic experience. And now I’m h-o-m-e. At my computer!

I hope you can take some of the tips I offered in this strange post and apply them to a dinner party, birthday party or other event where you’d be using place cards. You could follow all kinds of themes! For our event they were also used as “identifiers” because not everyone knew everyone else!

Thank you so much for popping in today. Please leave a comment below if you’re looking for a specific project or technique. And don’t forget to make a card and then make someone’s day by sending it to them.
