LET’S TRY A SKETCH TO GET THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING

Mary Jo Price shares a sketch every Monday and calls them Techno Stampers Sketch Challenges.

I really like this past Monday’s sketch:

Sketches are a great way to get your creative juices flowing.  The Sudsol email demo only group (see sidebar if you’re interested in a business only helpful group) that I belong to has a challenge this week for a Patriotic card so I decided to use this sketch for it.

Patriotic card from sketch TSSC321
This was a fun and easy sketch to get me going!

I’m so pleased with the way my card turned out—and in such a short time.  The Maritime Designer Series Paper was so easy and inspiring to work with.

I knew from the get-go that I wanted to use an oval rather than a circle.  I also pretty much thought I’d use the bird trio from the For the Birds stamp set.  They worked as I’d envisioned them.  The only problem was a flag.  I thought I’d make a little nautical type banner but it just wouldn’t ‘fly’ in the right direction.

Once I was having trouble with my ‘flag’ I knew what I was going to use, retired or not.

Americana Collection
I’m not sure what year this set retired but it’s order #9266 and was $28.95 for 16 images. It’s one of those I could never part with. I’m also an “Americana-phile”.

When I don’t know the measurements for layers on a card, especially when working with a sketch, I do trial-and-error with scratch paper.  Here are the measurements for this one:

  • stripes:  2-3/4″ x 5″
  • blue flag: 1-1/4″ x 4″
  • red flag: 1″ x 3-1/2″

I used the Maritime Designer Series Paper for the layers and Real Red card stock for the card front base. (8-1/2″ x 4-1/4″, scored at 5-1/2″ and folded).  Now would be a perfect time to check out other Designer Series Papers and buy three/get one for FREE.

The For the Birds stamp set was used for the main image.

Ovals Collection Framelits were used for the two oval pieces, the second and third pieces from the center (smallest)

And the flag—it came from Stampin’ Up!’s well retired Americana Collection.

I hope you’ll decide to try this fun sketch.  AND—if you do, please share it with me (Blythe@StampingWithBlythe.com) and I’ll post it here on my blog so others can enjoy your creativity.
Thanks for stopping in and I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow.
